Imagine being able to relax and read a novel in clear daylight at midnight or leaving a nightclub at 3am and finding the sun is still up. Finland is so unique in that the sun is reluctant to set beneath the horizon. In the northern town of Utsjoki the sun does not set for many weeks. The town can stay in complete daylight for up to two months at a time and even in Helsinki the ‘night’ consists only of a lengthy period of twilight.
Finland is also lucky enough to be home to the phenomenon known as Aurora Borealis. The majestic displays of shifting colored lights are absolutely beautiful and can be seen as many as two hundred times a year in the north or less so in Helsinki where the phenomenon can be viewed up to twenty times a year.
